This will be my 4th ST2000DM006 drive and I couldn’t be happier. All the drives work well, no issues with them at all despite some other unfortunate reviewers. They’re pretty quick for 2TB drives and they load up my games just fine. Is it faster than a SSD? No. Is it comparable to a WD Black? I would say yes, and it’s almost half the cost. I’ll gladly sacrifice a few seconds to save almost $50 from a 2TB WD Black.
They’re not noisy drives but once the drive starts spinning up it makes a slightly noticeable sound, it’s definitely not a con, just pointing it out. And it happens on all 4 of my drives. After the startup though it’s just a plain-ole’ sounding hard drive. Definitely much much quieter than a Toshiba/Hitachi 2TB I bought, now that thing is loud.
Bottom line is all drives fail, some are DOA, it happens. But so far none of these drives has failed on me yet so I’m quite confident in purchasing more from seagate if need be.

Purchased this drive 6 years ago and it’s beginning to fail (clicking noises started a few months ago and within the last week there have been performance issues that coincide with periods of more clicking than usual, so I’m pretty sure it’s on it’s way out). I’m still rating this highly because up until now it’s performed very well and 6 years of good performance for a 60 dollar hard drive seems completely fair. Plus it’s giving me plenty of warning rather than going out suddenly, so I can make a smooth transfer to a replacement drive before this one goes out.

To give you an idea of the wear I’ve been putting on it, I do game daily, but generally not the kinds of games that are super resource intensive and that would put an extraordinary amount of wear on the hardware. If you’re just looking to use this for internet browsing, file storage, and/or office software you’ll probably get a little more life out out of it than I did, but if you’re into hardcore gaming it will probably wear out sooner so I wouldn’t recommend it.

I bought this just a few days ago. I am sure most of you already know this but you need to go to disk manager after first install of this drive and create a partition for it to be visible under my pc. I was quiet sceptical of the performance as I have historically only used western digital products. I already have a 1Tb WD blue 7200rpm so decided to compare the performance of the two. Please remember that the 2 TB variant from WD is rated at 5400 rpm and not 7200rpm like the 1tb variant.
So I ran CrystalDiskMark and was surprised to see that this hard drive absolutely killed the WD blue 1 TB. Though both offer amazing sequential speeds and you will hardly notice any difference unless you are moving very large files. I have attached the read/write results below. Note the slower drive is WD blue 1 TB and the faster is this one.
Please remember that 2 TB translates to 1.81 TB of usable storage.

I purchased this hard drive one and a half year back, it got too many bad sectors yet was still working really good, it was still in warranty time so I took it to service centre and Seagate replaced the drive for new one in just 2 days time.

This drive is suitable for many uses. Anything from movies and music to most games will load quickly off of it, which makes it a good choice for a secondary drive. For a main drive, an SSD is a much better choice, as a computer will boot faster if the OS lives on an SSD. SSDs are also much quieter and consume less energy than HDDs. HDDs are still significantly cheaper per GB/TB than SSDs, which makes them suitable for bulk storage.

To install it, you will need a free 3.5″ HDD bay, and connectors for SATA power and SATA data. You could use an adapter to power it with molex, but this is not a good idea. The phrase “molex to SATA, lose all your data” has become a common saying for good reason, as most adapters are poorly made, sometimes melting or even catching fire when they fail, destroying the drive or other components along with it. You will probably not fit this into a laptop, as those usually only have 2.5″ drive bays, or the new M.2 sized drives. Refer to your computer’s documentation if you arte unsure which size it accepts.

Please note that this drive is not plug and play. You will probably need to format it and assign it a drive letter within your OS before you see it in your file explorer (this is fairly easy in Windows 10, a simple search will tell you how.)

You may have heard that Seagate drives have a high failure rate compared to other brands, which was true for an earlier iteration of the 1.5TB and 3TB BarraCudas. These are a newer model, and do not suffer from the same problem as the older version. That being said, you should always have backups of important files, or anything you can’t replace. Network Attached Storage devices, external drives, and cloud services are all good options for backup.

Lets be real, if you have a low capacity SSD around 120gb or less odds are you have run into the problem of running out of space, now one could but another SSD or even a bigger one, but SSDs at the moment are pretty expensive, so what’s a great alternative? A HDD of course!

Now over the years Seagate has been stepping up their hard drive game, less failures and more durability is absolutely great, since other hard drive manufactures have been on the decline of failure rates and durability, I had to go with Seagate on this one.

My last Seagate drive was a 1tb 5500 rpm drive, it was really noisy but I got that one about 10 years or so ago, so how much has Seagate improve in 10 years? A lot, seriously they did their research, this drive is really quiet, for 2tb I expected a noisy drive but its very quiet, and performs very well too, compared to one of my other computers that has a 1tb WD Blue drive, I have to say I prefer the 2tb Barracuda by a long shot, it makes very little noise and I don’t think there is virtually any spin up time at all, it just works.

I would definitely recommend anyone who has been using any other drive oem to just give Seagate another try, this drive proves they did their research and designed a solid HDD, I’m sure it will last a long time too.
