At this point when things arrives on time and just work while having everything it advertised… I’ll give it a five star for just not being broken and working.

Take what I’ve said as you will.

Excellent console. Plays all my catridges. Other reviews have indicated some carts do not work. If you try to play a game and it doesn’t work then make sure the region is set correctly since it could be set for PAL.

****IMPORTANT NOTICE: When you get the console, make sure it uses a USB-C power input. This is my 2nd console because I was shipped an older model using a micro USB power input. If you get the micro USB version then send it back and demand a new one; micro USB is notorious for failing at some point.

Giving 5 stars for the USB-C version.

Bought the Old Skool Classiq HD III after much research vs. RetroBit, etc. for the kids for Christmas. Since i bought it in October, but did not open it til end of December, no Amazon warranty. Cleaned up some old 8-bit games and they worked perfectly via the HDMI cable for a while. I had to start resetting the game, wiggling it a little, etc. to get it to start up. Then it started failing mid-game for no particular reason. I swapped the cables, tried all the different settings, ran it direct to the TV (instead of through the receiver – which sounds awesome by the way)… checked the 72-pin connector (it’s fine, looks like new), tried different cartridges, anything. There is no video signal coming from the unit to the TV for the 8-bit Nintendo slot. The others ones seem to throw a signal (TV switches input automatically), but I don’t have Genesis of SNES games to test. We used it maybe 9 or 10 times, it was never bumped, pulled off the shelf, or damaged in any way. It’s plugged into a audiophile level surge protecting power source. The unit just failed and is now bricked (and kids are bummed.)

I reached out for product support via the order details, which led me to Old Skool directly. They responded to my detailed emails w boilerplate responses showing (did you check the NTFC v PAL switch? – yeah.) Then they claimed that they “don’t sell through Amazon” and had no responsibility for this unit. Note the listing has the seller “Old Skool” and the product support link went to them. Tons of help!

In summary, the product is very cool. It was magical plugging in the old games and seeing them on the new TV. It’s very poorly built though, feels fragile and light in your hands, and perhaps there is some soldering issue or something else. Expect zero support if it breaks outside of the Amazon warranty period of 30 days. I gave them every opportunity to provide even a little guidance on a fix before posting this review. I suggest looking to another product for your classic gaming needs. These are not build well, cost $100, and the company does not stand behind its products.
